On October 25, the opening ceremony of Zephyr 50MW Project wind power project was held in Karachi, the largest city in Pakistan. It’s generally contracted for construction by SUMEC under the SINOMACH, one of the Top 500 enterprises in the world. Apart from the representatives of project owner and SUMEC Group, about 250 persons from financial institutions and government energy department, counterparts of Pakistan’s clean energy industry as well as core media were also present at the opening ceremony. Mr. Cai Jibo, general manager of SUMEC Group, and Mr. Guo Chunshui, business counselor of Chinese Consulate General in Karachi, Pakistan, were also present and gave speeches.
It’s reported that Zephyr 50 MW wind power project is located in Sindh Province, Pakistan, about 2 hours of driving from Karachi and 1 hour of driving from Qasim Harbor. This project occupies an area of 2,540 acres with total investment of 110 million US dollars. The investors own 20-year effective franchise of this project. As the EPC (Engineering Procurement Construction) contractor of the project, SUMEC will be responsible for design, construction, grid-connection and delivery. The construction period is expected to be 15 months and the civil engineering on the site of the project has been started. The project adopts 25 pieces of SIEMENS GAMESA G114-2.0 MW wind turbines. When the project has been completed, the annual energy production is expected to reach 179 million KWH.
At the opening ceremony of the project, Mr. Cai Jibo, general manager of SUMEC Group, congratulated on the project as it was started as scheduled and expressed appreciations to the project investors for their full understanding and support, appreciations to Pakistan’s energy department for their support on approval of grid-connection of the project. Afterwards, Mr. Cai Jibo introduced the brand of SUMEC Group in simple language for all the guests attending the ceremony. Afterwards, Mr. Guo Chunshui, business counselor of Chinese Consulate General in Karachi, Pakistan, gave a speech. He said that among 174 countries which had established diplomatic relations with China, Pakistan was the only “all-weather strategic partner”. “China-Pakistan Economic Corridor” was the first step of “Belt and Road Initiative” construction, which was very significant for both parties. Since the establishment of “China-Pakistan Economic Corridor”, China and Pakistan had actively pushed forward electric power cooperation projects to promote China’s technology, equipment and service to fully enter Pakistan’s market with more cooperative projects and wider range of development space. The electric power cooperation and development prospect was extremely broad between China and Pakistan, which would become the important content of bilateral economic and trade development in the future and play an exemplary role in building community of common destiny for China and neighboring countries. He expressed appreciation to SUMEC for Zephyr 50 MW wind power EPC project and claimed such a move would further strengthen the bridge of friendship between China and Pakistan.

In recent years, with constant and rapid economic development in Pakistan and continuous improvement of people's living standards, the shortage of electric power supply has been increasingly prominent and the situation of power rationing has occurred more frequently. The power-off time in summer in capital city, Islamabad, has been over 12 hours. In most rural and mountain areas, the daily power-off time has been as long as 20 hours. The average daily power shortage in all territory of Pakistan is about 4 million KWH and during the peak summer season the average daily power shortage is as high as 7.5 million KWH. Energy is the driving force of economic development and it’s also the key element for Pakistan to realize sustainable development. In order to change the situation of electric power shortage, Pakistan’s government has taken a series of measures to increase investment on electric power industry and encourage foreign and civil investment on electric power industry. All this has provided great imaginary space for SUMEC to conduct clean energy business in Pakistan.

Actually, Zephyr 50 MW wind power project is not the first EPC project in Pakistan. In January, 2015, the first “MW-level” 1.25 MW PV power station contracted and built by SUMEC as EPC contractor in Pakistan realized grid-connection successfully; in October, 2017, SUMEC’s EPC project of 18 MW PV station in Pakistan also realized grid-connection successfully. This power station is the first IPP (Independent Power Produce) project adopting tracking bracket in Pakistan. In October this year, SUMEC also won the bidding of general contractor order of distributed PV systems in 2,700 schools in Pakistan.
